She was only 11
She was only 11. Two men brutally raped her. They tore open her ligaments and tendons at her hips badly, so badly that as she healed physically from this horrible act, scars encased her hip joints so that she could no longer straighten her legs – could no longer walk normally. She was only 11.
She came to us at CURE Ethiopia a year later, when she was 12. We could offer her free, loving, respectful care. Care to release those scars around her hips. To make her free again to walk as a girl should. To run and jump and play again.
The other day, as she came into surgery, she was shaking. This only became worse as she lay down. We exposed only so much as we had to, but I am sure there were memories that returned to her. We spoke words of reassurance. We gave her medication to help ease the fear. The surgery was successful to make her legs straight and freely moveable again.
I pray God will release the scars that are sure to be encasing her heart. I pray she won’t have to carry this memory, this burden for the rest of her life. I pray that her mind would become free. Only God can do this part. He is a God of liberation, healing, and restoration.
I waited patiently for the Lord to help me,
and he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground
and steadied me as I walked along.
He has given me a new song to sing,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see what he has done and be amazed.
They will put their trust in the Lord.
