About Recon

About Recon

Since the middle of the 20th Century, college ministry in the US operated on a model based on the mission agency. The mission agency parallels the church and employs paid staff and volunteers to serve the spiritual needs of young people between high school and college graduations. The numbers of college students — both American and international — have far outgrown the capacity of this model to approximate its goals of reaching even a sizeable percentage of students. Enter the generational model.

The generational model recognizes two realities. First, today’s Christian high school students are tomorrow’s college students. Christian college students on campus will always far outnumber mission agency staff. Second, the generational model sees the bookends of high school and college graduations as doors, not walls. Generationally minded college workers see the wisdom of connecting with Christian high school students as preparation of their arrival at college, and see college graduates as mentors.

Recon is a generational college ministry model that:

  • starts with Christian high school students and
  • builds a bridge to college that
  • becomes a network for the college-aged part of the Body of Christ that
  • morphs into a united army of believers all over the country that
  • engages in spiritual warfare to free those trapped by the enemy

Here’s the process for Christian high school students:

    1. Go through the Recon training course (see store for materials) that includes:
      • Defensive operations:
        • spiritual formation (identity in Christ)
        • developing integrity (freedom in Christ)
      • Offensive operations:
        • worldview study & stronghold analysis
        • strategy training
        • network evangelism
        • Cover Cells
      • Training sites:
        • Christian schools
        • church youth groups
        • Sunday school classes
        • home schools
        • high school Bible study groups

Register on the Recon site by the college you’re attending. Then

      • contact other Recon grads at that school
      • start a Cover Cell online if possible before you arrive
      • make it face-to-face after you get on campus

This is your site. God is putting together a vast army of freedom fighters. If you and God don’t make this happen, it won’t! It’s your call, and your time. Your generation is looking for real freedom. You can bring it to them. If you don’t, they’ll not only lose theirs, but you’ll lose yours too! There’ll be no good excuses in heaven, and they won’t work here either. So what are you waiting for? Move out!

A Word About Warfare, Fighting, and Violence

A casual observer might see our website and conclude from the military pictures and terms that Recon promotes war, fighting and/or violence. However, this is a Christian website with Christ as our foundation and the Bible as our guide. It was Christ who said, “Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). What other religious leader ever said to do that? None!

Recon adheres to all of what Jesus said. He also warned about the strife and conflict created against those who follow him (Matthew 10). We acknowledge that this is unfortunate but real, fueled by those who hate Christ (John 15:18). Facing such hatred in a godly fashion is a major challenge for believers. God calls us not to hate our neighbors or even our persecutors, but to hate evil (Psalm 97:10, Proverbs 8:13) and our own disobedience (Romans 7:15). We are never to hate our neighbors or anyone else.

Thus, the battle Christians face is primarily inward, “to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8), then outward, “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). Speaking the truth (John 14:6) involves helping those without the truth find it. It means that all religious ideas are not equally true. By definition, worldviews are mutually exclusive. Thus, ideological conflicts are inevitable.

To share biblical truth lovingly is evidence of a Christian’s concern and compassion for the temporal and eternal well being of others, not cultural imperialism or religious bigotry. It is not the activity of narrow-minded extremists and prejudicial, intolerant zealots when done in love according to the Bible. Such inflammatory allegations sadly shows others’ ignorance and open hatred already existing toward Christians, just as Jesus said.

Thus, Recon’s military images and terminology are only a way to help keep the focus of the serious responsibility Christians have toward their neighbors 24-7: the internal battle for integrity, godliness, humility and obedience, and the external struggle for the gospel to be heard and believed among the nations. Nothing more, nothing less.
