What is easy or cheap grace? – Audio
One often hears about “easy or cheap grace” from those who say, “If you preach grace without a focus on how we should be obedient or holy then you cheapen God’s grace.” Perhaps this may not be what you hear, maybe it will sound something like this “If you are always preaching grace you may give those listening the feeling they can go on sinning and thus make grace easy or cheap.”
To say that we need to be careful of teaching grace without the law is indeed true, but it is also just as true to say that we need to be careful of teaching the law without grace. For it is not one without the other, but both together and individually, that needs to be taught.
Though we do not teach grace with the law so that we do not abuse grace because we always will. Rather, so that as grace teaches us, we know what it is teaching us (Titus 2:12) and enabling (2 Timothy 2:1) us to do. This is the reason why we should not teach the law without grace. For the law is not something that can be achieved, a standard to shoot for, something that we can hope to live. But if we do more and be more, then in effect we can achieve more, which pleases God with our obedience.
