Know God is at Work Even When You Can’t See It

by Lynne Raatz

2 Kings 6:17
“Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full
of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”

Have you ever felt all alone? Like God is nowhere to be found in the midst of your current circumstances?

I recently read the account of the prophet Elisha’s servant, Gehazi in 2 Kings and I was reminded that even when we can’t see it, God is at work in our lives, working details out on our behalf.

In 2 Kings 6 we read how ancient Aram was at war with Israel. The King of Aram was angry because the prophet Elisha was able to predict where Aram’s army was planning to attack. With his foresight, Elisha told Israel’s King in advance so the King could plan the Israeli army’s next move. With his frustration mounting, Aram’s King decided to send a large rank of soldiers to capture Elisha so he wouldn’t’ be able to help Israel defeat his nation.

Verses 14-15 describe what happened next: “Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city. When the servant of the man of God [Gehazi] got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. ‘Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?’ the servant asked.

Being surrounded by a large army with no way to escape, Gehazi was terrified.

The story continues in verses 16-17: ‘Don’t be afraid’ the prophet [Elisha] answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed ‘Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.’ Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

Imagine Gehazi’s astonishment in seeing the army of the Lord encircling him and Elisha. Gehazi thought their situation was hopeless. They were surrounded by Aram’s army with no apparent way out. With his natural eyes it looked in all ways like God was not present. However, when Gehazi’s eyes were opened to the spiritual realm, he saw God was in every way at work behind the scenes. God was faithful and He was working on their behalf even when they couldn’t see it.

The same is true in our lives. Even when it seems God is absent and our situation is hopeless, God is at work in ways unseen.

What situation or circumstance are you facing today where you feel God is nowhere to be found? Trust that God is at work on your behalf even if you cannot yet see how. Know God is for you, He loves you, and He has your very best in mind.

Continue to seek Him and honor Him with your life knowing He is at work for your good and His glory. Remember there is a larger spiritual story unfolding all around us and our earthly perspective does not tell the full tale.
