PLAYING CATCH UP!

PLAYING CATCH UP!

By Arlene Wallis

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.  Hebrews 4:12

How many of us as children remember playing catch up with our friends?  Even if you were not playing you heard the words from your mom saying she would leave you behind if you didn’t catch up!  Skipping, running or jumping, we did our best to make sure that we were where we were supposed to be!

Surprisingly in adult life we find ourselves playing catch more times that we ought!  Whether it is with the bills, kids and school or a much needed conversation with our spouse or close friend, we all want to be as current with everyday issues!  In the past few weeks while reading the bible, I have noticed that I was falling behind trying to play catch up with my bible reading plan!

I ride public transportation so while trying to pay attention to the road and not missing my stop, I am listening to my bible instead of reading it.  Some oppose this but it works when you don’t have the room to break out your bible in a crowded bus!  But I also know that we must be doers of the word, not just hearers!  (James 1:22)

This got me to thinking about staying in God’s word!  Joshua says that we should keep this book of the law always on our lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. (Ch. 1:8)  We know that as human beings and Christians we can in no way go without Gods help to keep the law which is why Jesus was sent to us and offered us His grace so that we can be forgiven of our transgressions (John 1:17)!

We know that we were formed by His words (Gen 1:26), His word offers encouragement (Heb 10:24-25) and reading the word moves us to act accordingly (James 1:22).  When we allow ourselves time to get into the word, the word can get into us!  (Ps 119:16) We find that we can talk about it (2 Tim 2:7 and 1 Tim 4:5-6), show it (Ps 119:11), live it (Heb 4:12) and best thing of all, we know that we are covered by the word! (Rom 10:8 and 1 Peter 2:2)

In the world we live in today, the word is important because it keeps us grounded and rooted in the faith that saved us from ourselves (Mat 24:35 and 2 Peter 1:5).  We know that we should stay girded with the word so that we are not left to ourselves or to the wiles of the world and the temptations that attack us daily (Eph 6:10-17). We are to be strong and courageous and the Lord will be with us everywhere we go (Joshua 1:9).  Even when we fall behind, miss a reading or just plain forget (I’m human of course), we should take the word seriously enough to carve out time to meet with Him in His word!  Reading the bible is a discipline and it takes time, trial, error and prayer to stay connected.

Even as I write this, I know that I am behind in my reading but never alone in my walk with God!  He never loses His place in my life, even if I have to catch up!  I start and end my day with a Thank you and end my day the same!  Always grateful for the opportunities availed to me when I open my eyes to another day in Christ!

So just remember, if you have to play catch up, do it with a sincere heart, open mind asking God to help you and to be receiving of His word and work for you!
