JOIN THE MISSION
A PIONEER IN CENTRAL ASIA
When you head into another culture to live among the local people, you feel clueless. You hope to understand them and become someone they can listen to, but you are clueless of how. When the culture is very different from your own, you can’t help but be clueless. Even when you visit your home culture again, you find yourself clueless. That’s what it was like for us when we moved to Central Asia 20 years ago.
Autumn*, a Pioneers missionary in tribal Africa, started a discipleship group among women from several different tribes. Leah*, an abrasive, middle-aged woman from a distant tribe began to attend the group. Every time they met, Leah managed to annoy and frustrate Autumn within the first few minutes. But Leah continued to attend the Bible study faithfully.
“I guess I want you to know that God uses us exactly as He has created us to be.”
In her first year of ministry in Central Asia, Anne began learning the language and acclimating to her surroundings. One Tuesday evening, she put on a kettle of tea as her roommate answered a knock at the door. Then, Anne heard her roommate scream as three masked men rushed into the apartment. As she went to see what happened, one of the men began beating her.
It was the jewelry on old women’s hands. And the bright wash of dyed fabric. In this land so streaked with mud and mess, vivid marks of beauty are signaled by the delicate tinkle of bangles and the blur of purple and orange and red on scooters speeding by. Royal robes on peasant streets. Brilliant jewels on hardened cheeks. Rough and smooth. Dark and light. This was India.
OH…BUT CAN WE EVEN IMAGINE THE POWER…..The POWER it took for God to create the heavens and the the earth…this infinite universe! All in six days…..Oh, BUT THE POWER!
Now, we ask…Can you imagine the POWER OF GRACE? The Power it took for God to send His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ into the world to live and die for us and then to resurrect Him and deliverunto us His Holy Spirit?….Oh, BUT THE POWER!
