The Mission of the ARMY OF GOD
By Ayo Ogedengbe
THE ARMY OF THE LORD is composed of unusual soldiers who are sheep and lambs. An army that does not use guns and bullets. Yet are never afraid, even of death. “for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” 2nd (Cor. 12:4). An army of priests who at the same time are kings with an ability to hear their commander’s (God) voice. “my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”(John 10:27). Their main opponent is the devil who they are prepared to fight non-stop, even though he is invisible. “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”(James 4:7).
The army of God has a three-fold assignment, which are;
1) A ministry to God through sacrificing of praises to Him
2) A ministry to one another, with the strong helping the weak
3) A ministry to the whole world. Bringing them into salvation
This is by far the summary of what is expected of the God’s chosen Army. We should remember that the a soldier of the almighty is any saved soul who has had a personal encounter with the one, only and true fountain of living water –Jesus Christ. He has met and believes in Christ, so out of that person shall flow rivers of living water. That means he has become a part of Christ. He could be categorized as a “sub-fountain” of living water with the sole aim of distributing the offer of the living water (the Gospel truth) all over the world, ministering healing and deliverance to the afflicted in the name of Jesus Christ.
1) A ministry to God through sacrifices of praises to Him.
“Sing praises to the Lord, who dwells in Zion! Declare His deeds among the people” (Psalm 9:11) “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.”(Hebrew 13:15).
The acceptable worship and praise to God is required from His victorious armies and not the brothers and sisters of the world who still use their bodies for sins. The armies of God are the genuinely saved souls who have sacrificed their sinful selves to worship God in spirit and in truth. Those set of people are the categories of people that the Lord wants to be His worshippers. The angels and the saints sing praises to the Lord most high in the heavenly places. Also a set of people on the earth must sing His praises, these set of people are the saints on earth. Who else will sing the praises if not the saved souls? Definitely not the worldly and carnally minded people but them that have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light.
2) A ministry to one another; with the stronger helping the This assignment is a two-way assignment –spiritually and physically.
In the Body of Christ, there are people who need our help spiritually. A soldier must not leave a falling soldier behind. A brethren could be weak in faith, probably passing through a particular problem that is obviously affecting his spiritual life, maybe a storm that makes him question in his heart “where are you oh Lord”. It is the duty of a soldier of the cross to admonish such person with the word of God to bring him back to his feet in faith. A brethren might believe in his heart something in his heart which is not right with the faith, it is the duty of the soldiers of Christ to enlighten him on such matters. If one part of the body is reproached, remember the whole body is reproached. “For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, THE REPROACHES OF THOSE WHO REPROACHED YOU FELL ON ME” (Romans 15:3).
“We then who are strong ought to bear the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” (Romans 15:2).
More importantly physically, amongst soldiers of the cross, there should always be willingness to help and to share with one another. The Believers of old grew so large because irrespective of their numbers there was love among them, “and they sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need” (Acts 2:45). “so continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart” (Act 2:46). This made them find favor with people and by so doing they added to their numbers daily, because people wanted to be a part of the “Happy-loving family”.
God demands from every soldier of the Cross not only tithe but offerings also. This is so that the tithes might meet the need of the ministers who directs His worship while the offering meets the needs of the needy in the fold. “for the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, YOU SHALL OPEN YOUR HAND WIDE TO YOUR BROTHER, TO YOUR POOR AND YOUR NEEDY, IN YOUR LAND.” This is very important also, we support ourselves in the Church and also think of what we can give back to our immediate community. For example: the Church could pay a visit to the motherless babies home with gifts which has been contributed amongst members. “is it not to share your bread with the hungry and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?” (Isaiah 58:7)
3) A ministry to the whole world bringing them into salvation.
“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?”(Isaiah 58:7)
This ministry is the greatest commission. And all Christians today are benefiting of the obedience of the missionaries of old, we are therefore under the obligation –as the Army of the Lord to preach the Gospel. If not for any reason, but because we are being ordered by our Captain (Jesus) “And He said to them, GO INTO ALL THE WORLD AND PREACH THE GOSPEL TO EVERY CREATURE” (Mark 16:15). He goes further to say accompanied with that will be the ability to cast out demons, break yokes and the good news has come to everybody to undo the heavy burdens each might be loaded with. The book of Isaiah chapter 58 verse 7 tells it to us, “is it not the fast that I have chosen…” It is our duty to let the Christ in us manifest His power by simply obeying an instruction “GO INTO ALL THE WORLD…”
The love of Christ that is in us always urges us to preach the good news, or at least tell a brother or a sister. Why? Because our eyes have been opened to the doom awaiting those who are not saved. Hell is not a place one will wish his enemy, that’s why we must preach the gospel. Remember the work of the Army is to preach the Gospel, it is the Holy Spirit that does the transformation. It is the Holy Spirit that carries your message with power into the soul. You never know who your words will save, so do not hold back any opportunity to preach the word, you might be saving a soul. We have been planted in the Gospel, and we must bear fruit by showing the Gospel through our works and words.
