What To Do, Just Move
By Patrick Badstibner
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? – Micah 6:8
27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” – Luke 27-28
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. – 1 Corinthians 10:31
and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, – 1 Thessalonians 4:11
Sometimes such a question of, “What is God’s will”, will be crystal clear, other times it will feel like we are walking in the dark completely, wondering what in the world are we getting ready to step in or step on.
Knowing the will of God is a question that volumes have been devoted to and this post is surely not the space to exhaust those volumes. To listen to some, they would have us believe that God will always make it abundantly clear about what his will is, we just have to wait for him to move. To those I would reply, “He’s moving already, why aren’t you?”
Stuck In The Mystery
The reason that most of us get stuck, stay stuck and remain frigid is not always due to a lack of clarity, just as it is not always a lack of trust, or fear. Often it is simply that we have forgotten that God’s ways are way above ours, his methods beyond our comprehension, his thoughts are nothing like ours, that he loves the mysterious and loves to leave his children in mystery as he forces them to depend on HIM and not them.
In doing so he breaks their independence, reveals to them their weakness and causes them to depend. One thing for sure, is if we are expecting God to flash lights, sound the sirens, make things pop out of the air, fall in place at the right time and/or move in miraculous ways all the time, we may discover ourselves being severely left gasping for fresh air, as we recover from the air of confusion. For, within mystery there is always questions, but within the mystery is found great comfort in knowing that God directs every molecule, both in calamity and prosperity.
Be Ready To Get Muddy
Speaking of calamity and prosperity, here lies one of many reasons a lot of us are found not just asking, but wailing that God would show us his will. We hope that if we know God’s will we will not face calamity, but prosperity in those steps, decisions and movements we are getting ready to go ahead with.
Only problem is that it is often through calamity, suffering and failure that God does his most life changing work in our lives. So, expecting to know his will to escape such difficulties and hard times may be like betting on a three legged dog in a dog race.
NEWSFLASH: Most hoping God will show them his will in every situation are looking for things that God has already given and as a result he is unlikely to give them again, when we did not listen or search them out the first time.
Wrong Or Right Hero
There is a need within all of us to know glory, to be the hero in the story and is the reason we often whimper when we feel that God is not even offering a hint of his will about certain situations, for fear that we will discover we are not the hero we thought we were. We need to remember we will never fully know the glory we lost until Heaven and the hero within will never give enough shade from the hottest of days that burns to our soul.
No, that shade is only found in the real hero who came externally to rescue us from our internal selves. So, to hope in ourselves making right calls and decisions may leave us without any shade covering.
IT’s OK Let Them See, In Fact Go Ahead and Let Them Know
AH! another reason we worry, fret, freeze in indecision, and not move forward is our fear of being seen as inadequate, not capable, not living right and why we need the real hero to rescue us more from our selves daily, than to return and rescue us from the evils of the world. We have long based our identities on that which we are good at, that which we can conquer, being seen as strong, having it together, or as Elsa said in Frozen
“Don’t let them in, don’t let them see Be the good girl you always had to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know
Well now they know”
Yet, the answer is not in letting it go, claiming to not care, within the airs of independence and needing no one. In truth we were created to be in community, living our new identity in Christ, not achieving our identity, but in receiving it, then living.
Yet, to get the point that we are able to live in community, stop achieving our identity and learn to find it in Christ. In getting to that point though we may find God allowing us to fall flat on our faces, make the wrong moves, step in a pile of dung and leave us feeling feel like our prayers are not being answered.
As a result, our focus is redirected to knowing that in Him we are unquestionably adequate and undoubtedly capable, even when it seems we are not. Because, when we know we are defined by Christ we no longer need to worry about what’s coming around the corner or worried with fear in anticipation of the future.
We are free to not live expecting perfection from ourselves or worst of all, others. When we know that we are the beloved bride of Christ, there exists no slavery of regret, worry or waiting for the next right decision, next big step to make us feel worthy, so we can move forward with complete reckless abandonment of fear.
Experience The Ordinary, As Extraordinary
Not only are we finally free to live in the ordinary and the present, we stop looking for God to move in the miraculous, extraordinary, with flashing signs, blaring sirens, neon lights, or writing in the sky for directions. This is not to say that he won’t, but he may just be waiting for movement that begins with prayerful confession and repentance.
“Well, I want a peace says one.” Be careful of using as the last say, that all, “illustrious peace” many are waiting for. Even, when one gets it, one should remember that God has already given us all we need for godliness, including the directions to walk in his plan for our lives.
Often, one is looking for nothing more than a false security, based not on secure knowledge, but an emotional euphoria. Those emotional euphoria sometimes are not coming from where one thinks they are coming, remember there is a reason Satan is a master deceiver.
ABBA Father Is Infinitely Tender
“But, what about walking away from God because of a decision one has made, asks another?” Interesting thought there, did you know the Holy Spirit never leaves his house to go outside. Kinda hard to walk away from God when God, remains inside you and will not leave.
So, what about those decisions that the Bible is not clear on? What about when it seems that a lot of good decisions lay in front of us? How do we know what is the right one?
Always, remember that there will never be a step we make that is sinless and God knows that and it is why he is far more tender on us, than we are ourselves. He knows that our chances of making the right choice, for the right reasons, with the right motivation is a lot rarer, than we believe it to be. If God made his will guesswork or difficult to get or laborious in any way to figure out we would rarely get it, because in truth we are not that patient, we are not that bright and we are extremely lazy when it comes to doing the things God wants us to do anyway
Have A Great Adventure!
Don’t be afraid to make the wrong call, just aim to please him in making one. Learn to live! The greatest gift he gave us after the gospel, was the gift of repentance, feel free to confess, repent and repeat often. The Holy Spirit really is working in us to remind us of the truths of the Word of God, to make His law true in our lives, to saturate us and train us with gospel truth in order that we might make more and more decisions that glorify God.
In making more of the type of choices that show that we are choosing to allow Christ to live through us, the easier it will become to make those choices. The more we make those choices the clearer it will be to us that we do indeed have a perfect, complete, holy new identity (2 Corinthians 5:17-21) that reflects not only that the law of God has been written on our new heart (Jeremiah 31:33), it is also not about us claiming a competency of our own (2 Corinthians 3:4-6), but learning what is the power of Christ within us (Ephesians 3:14-19).
If his ways are above ours, His thoughts are beyond us, then anything that is not in His Word, He must have considered small stuff, so don’t sweat the small stuff. So,whatever you may find you want to do, as long it is reflects Him and serves others — DO IT! Really — WING IT! Live life! Enjoy Life!
Live as though you were dying, because you are, you have nothing to lose, because you don’t and as a result — risk anything, because you can! Name that venture – whatever, choose either option, name that child, live like you now need nothing, and have everything you need to live this life as God intended, because you do.
Take time and experience life as it was intended, in the worship of the Beloved and in total sacrifice for others. Rest comfortable in the assurance that he has it and controls every molecule. Now that’s freedom!
